Update March 2021:
Fixed the download links at the bottom of the page. All versions can also be found here: Ainol NOVO8 Firmware links
Original Post:
A very quick update this time round, release 4.1 was intended to be a patch but after cheeyee's release of patch9 which required a full reflash I quickly dropped the patch and started on this full update. Although only a small change of version number this is a big change in abilities. The big one Tegra game support in the market, follow this guide Tegra Games on the Novo 8 and you can make your 4.1 installation able to see and download Tegra games. I can't include the required software as it's a paid app (but cheap for what you get) and it would still require things to be done after.
Also I have setup a Twitter account for the site check out the box on the right hand side of the page, I shall post updates and all sorts, there might be some randomness as my friends have already latched onto it :)
To keep things short and sweet the Readme will now be kept on a separate page Click Here and a plain text copy is in the download. Check out the Changelog/What's New below then get your download and enjoy. No screen shots this time round not really anything different to see.

Unfortunately my touchscreen doesn't work at all in this release, trackball does but no touch...
ReplyDeleteWent back to 4.0
ReplyDeleteTouchscreen back so def problem with this...
That's quite odd had no problems at this end, can I ask if you did all three wipes to ensure the was no trace of 4.0? Also would you mind trying again and letting me know.
DeleteSame thing on 2 novo8's. wiped data/wipe cache/wipe media, installed 4.1 -> does not respond to touch. Rebooted using jogball, still not respond. Had to revert to 4.0.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely weird, the version uploaded should be no different to the last revision I flash personally for testing. I shall try out the upload copy against my last SD Card copy and report back tomorrow night (it's gone midnight, need to go to bed)
ReplyDeleteWonder what has gone wonky . . .
Yep, Tablet novo 8. Doesn't respond sensor.
ReplyDeleteEvening all,
ReplyDeleteI have just downloaded a copy of my Firmware from Rapdishare to ensure I was using the same copy of you all have. It installed without issue and touch screen works fine. I can't honestly see why you have had problems.
Can I ask what version of the tablet those of you experiencing problems have, White or Black? 8 or 16GB?
Anyone out there got a good/bad flash to report?
Tried it again. Black 8gb units, 2 identical - touch does not work. White 8gb unit - not affected. Unfortunately, my android knowledge is not enough to troubleshoot this :(
DeleteI plugged in usb keyboard and mouse, and got logs using logcollector - may be this can help. http://pastebin.com/mqYUf1GV
Also noticed some problems with wifi - it tries to obtain IP address and cannot do it, disconnects and tries again. Had to set static IP to download logcollector. White Novo8 - works well. (may be it's just my router)
Thanks for the logs I shall read them over in more detail tomorrow.
Deletei've got black 8 gb Doesn't work
ReplyDeleteAlso have white 8 gb and it's work!
don't understant what it can be wrong
i've got white 16 gb, after rebooting the A9 logo stays on the screen. I have formatted everything and reflashed it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your replies folks, this one is a proper puzzler. I'm running a Black 8gb myself so that's a puzzler the one and only reason I could think of is that some of the tablets are not responding well to the new jitter fix (maybe), I shall have to look into it.
ReplyDeleteTell you all what I shall do. . . 4.1 was based off the newer firmware which had an improved jitter fix that was built into the Kernel hence why I had to do a full release. However I was about 90% done with the original 4.0>4.1 patch, I can finish it up and release it as 4.0SE (both patch and new flash) this will give you most of what 4.1 has including the new Tegra fixes but leave you on the older firmware. On paper those of you who have had no issue running 4.0 should be ok with this.
I shall try and release it this weekend as the rest of my week is a touch hectic.
Please add the headphone profile, the 4.0 isnt loud enough, for me at times....will the SE release also include the anti-jitter????
ReplyDeleteThe SE release will have the anti jitter fix from cheeyee's patch8d which is not the kernel based one that his patch9 and my 4.1 release use. The 'USB Device Manager' app from 8d also included the Headphone volume fix so 4.0SE will have that ability as well. By and large the only real difference between the two should be the way the jitter fix is implemented and some very minor stuff.
Delete4.1 working here,novo 8 advanced 8gb white
ReplyDeleteThanks!! It works great on mine! It seems very stable and fast. Touch works just fine.
ReplyDeleteThanks!!! It works superb on mine, touch screen is way better, overall it is faster, only downside-the battery drains out faster..keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI imagine the slightly faster drain is from the kernel based jitter fix, in 4.0 the jitter fix was tweakable in the 'USB Device Manager' app to lessen the correction on battery if needed, there appears to be no ability to do so with the kernel based version of the fix.

ReplyDeleteSaw you post in my inbox, did you manage a successful install?
DeleteAnd What about problem with our's tablets? doesn't work sensor only jogball. Can you fix it?
ReplyDeleteHi VzLobster, please read back over my comments post from May 1st, it seems some of your tablets do not respond well to the 4.1 and there's not much I can do as there is no pattern to it. I'm going to make another 4.0 release that has a better but not the latest fix for those of you who are having problems.
Deletethe ICS rom has been release for novo 8 will you be working with that code to clean it up?
ReplyDeleteWhich ICS are you referring to please, there are two or three back-port versions al of which have their own issues to be resolved before they are stable. I am keeping an eye and if one becomes good enough for daily use I shall certainly then look to do some work on that release.
DeleteMy white 8gb novo8 is same no touchscreen input.
ReplyDeleteYep it's hit and miss on this release, you will need to use 4.0 and I have not got round yet to the SE version that will give you most of the 4.1 release features. See above comments for longer explanation about this bug.
Deleteshame. All I really wanted was the tegra support
ReplyDeleteI shall try and get the 4.0SE release sorted over the weekend, things been a bit hectic in the Real World™ the last couple of weeks. The 4.0SE version was originally going to be the 4.1 patch before it became the new release, key feature of that patch was the Tegra support. I did not finish the patch fully but I need to reflash my tablet back to 4.0 to work on finishing and testing the patch.

DeleteI have step by step with screenshots from my last upgrade. I'd be happy to share.
DeleteI have 1 Ainol Novo 8 White 8gb and is not working the touchscreen.
ReplyDeleteHave the white 8GB as well and the same touchscreen issue. If I leave the sdcard in when I turn it on after selecting restart (just turns it off for me), it hangs up on the Cortex A9/AINOL screen. If I pull the sdcard and then select restart it boots, but no touchscreen.
ReplyDeleteSecondly: you rock! Thanks for creating something awesome and working to help us all be able to enjoy it!
any chance to get the 4.0se soon?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Please see new post.
DeleteAm sure you're super busy; thanks for all the work making something that gives us all a better tablet. I'm using the V4.0 because I have the touchscreen issue with 4.1 and I have a couple issues I was wondering if anyone else experiences. My wifi is terribly unreliable and will enter a situation where it continuously loops disconnecting, starting up, searching, disconnecting. A restart is the only thing that (sometimes) cures. Also, the tablet will seemingly randomly run into EXTREME sluggishness, where again a restart is the only cure. Any ideas anyone? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI get the random sluggishness from time to time on both the Novo and my Android-ed HTC HD2 I think it's just the ram or cpu management gets all muddled up. The wifi thing is just down to the quality of the chip and antenna, my first unit had flaky wifi and when I tore it down found the single antenna wire was barely soldered to the antenna aerial. My current unit behaves better but again sometimes will refuse to play nice.
DeleteOK, thanks!
DeleteHi Andy.
ReplyDeleteI think i have a problem with your last release.
I had v.3 installed on my white 8 gb novo 8 advanced. All was ok.
Tried to install v.4.1 at least 4 or 5 times and the arm cortex screen stays locked or even turns off in a few seconds after the cortex screen appears.
Tried to reinstall v.3 again and i couldn´t anyway. The same problem.
Tried with original ainol 627 firmware and it worked.
Tried with other custom roms from the web and it worked. (I dont like them, prefer yours)
Tried with usb image tools and novo-8-update.img from novo8tools 20110719 and i got froyo.
Tried again with all your releases and the same result. I cant believe it.
I´m desesperated and i would be very grateful if you could help me.
Sorry for my english and thanks a lot for your excellent job
Hello Nacho,
DeleteSorry to hear you are having trouble, like pashby I assume you can still run V3 at present just not the 4x series, the Novo 8's do seem to vary in quality/hackability and I'm afraid to say it sounds like you have one of the ones that does not want to play nice.
I have a problem with my Ainol when i Try to shutdown it restarts, its impossible to shutdown iv tried everything, what could it be.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Which version of the firmware are you running? Also do you have it plugged in to charge?
DeleteThe 2.x and older releases would never shut down correctly and whichever release you use the charger will cause it to stay awake due to a design feature.
Well it does not shut down even when it's not conected to the charger.
DeleteIm using 2.3.4!
Even when it's not plugged it shows a message when i try to shutdown that says: Power off To Charge.
And it is the 3.1 version!
DeleteDid this happen with the stock rom the unit came with or just the 3.1 release?
DeleteI Don't really know.
DeleteI think it's coincidence, because whille i was instaling the rom i conected to another charger for mistake, that is what probably originated the problem, But if there is any chance of it being a software problem i would be really glad.
So i think it is hardware.
Has anyone had any luck with the 4.1 touchscreen issue being resolved or bypassed? That is, has anybody experienced the no touchscreen problem with 4.1 and then gotten touchscreen to work with 4.1 through any means? It seems so much better than 4.0, would love to try it.
ReplyDeleteFor those looking for the 3.1se it's now up on the frontpage.
ReplyDeletecant install on novo8 16G white after a complete back to the original firmware
ReplyDeleteHi Javed,
ReplyDeleteYou need to download the zip file and unpack it to a micro SD card then install it using recovery mode. Full instructions are give in the 'Novo 8 Readme' link at the top of the page.
